From 15 to 26 September 2026, Achao takes over the Bastion Royal of the Citadel of Château d’Oléron with Éloge de la Métamorphose, an exhibition conceived as a dialogue between painting, light and architecture.
Within the mineral atmosphere of the stone vaults, the artist’s recent works engage with the space and invite the eye to slow down.
Motifs, transparencies, colours and plays of light reveal themselves throughout the journey. Nothing appears permanently fixed: forms emerge, overlap, shift and disappear, making way for others.
An exhibition to experience as much as to observe.
With this new series, Achao continues a practice developed over several years around The Ephemeral in Motion and the thought of Heraclitus: Panta Rhei — everything flows, everything passes.
But something has changed.
In the paintings created in 2026, motifs become denser and more fragmented, seemingly entering a movement of their own. The Mandala become expanding organisms; the Vâhana become passages; colour gains in intensity, while transparencies and the treatment of pictorial matter deepen perception.
Metamorphosis is no longer merely what painting represents.
The paintings become vehicles for an inner transformation for visitors willing to engage with the experience.
The exhibition has been conceived in close dialogue with the Bastion Royal.
Here, the stone is not merely a backdrop. The vaults, volumes, natural light and traces of history all contribute to the experience offered to the visitor.
The paintings take their place within this ancient space without seeking to erase it. Instead, they introduce other rhythms, other movements, other ways of perceiving.
“The Bastion Royal is not simply an exhibition space; it becomes an extension of the painting. Stone, light and the works come together as one and the same breath.”
— Achao
The press dossier explores this relationship between the history of the Bastion Royal and a contemporary artistic practice itself rooted in transformation and becoming.
At a time when images follow one another at dizzying speed, Achao proposes an experience that demands precisely the opposite: time, attention and an openness of the gaze.
Colour attracts.
The motif holds the gaze.
Transparency shifts perception.
And gradually, the gaze begins to move.
Éloge de la Métamorphose is an invitation to experience the silent movement of the world.
The critical text devoted to the 2026 paintings highlights this evolution: painting no longer seeks merely to represent movement, but tends to make movement a condition of the work itself.
